Q3 Earnings Call (2023)

From The Author of the Acacia Seeds and Other Extracts, 1974

This work centers on an audio recording of Raytheon’s 2023 third-quarter earnings call. Throughout the call, layered within the corporate dialogue, a series of nonverbal sonic intrusions disrupt the listening experience. Though clearly audible, these interruptions remain ambiguous, strange, synthetic, but not immediately legible.

When visualized in a spectrogram, the sounds resolve into images: photographic depictions of conflicts explicitly referenced during the call as drivers of increased revenue. Constructed entirely from audio data, the images are embedded directly into the acoustic fabric of the recording, accessible only through a shift in perception from hearing to seeing.

By inserting these visual referents into the auditory space of corporate speech, the work exposes a dissonance between the language of profitability and the material consequences of militarized conflict. It draws attention to the mechanics by which violence is abstracted, operationalized, and made legible only within certain frames—financial, rhetorical, or visual.
